How does Lumigan work?

Lumigan eye drops contain the active ingredient Bimatoprost ophtalmic solution which is prostaglandin derivative. The medication works by improving drainage of fluid from the eye and thus helps decrease high intraocular pressure. By lowering introcular pressure Bimatoprost prevents damage to the optic nerve. Along with decreasing pressure in the eyes, Bimatoprost stimulate eyelashes growth making them darker, thicker and longer. It is believed that Bimatoprost opthalmic solution activate the growth phase of eyelashes growth, making this phase longer.

 

Mode of Administration

Lumigan is an ophthalmic remedy that is administered directly in the affected eye. The recommended treatment dosage is one drop per day in the affected eye in the evening. The increase of dosage regiment does not increase the therapeutic effectiveness of the medication but otherwise reduces its efficacy. It is very important to follow the recommendations of your health care provider to ensure the treatment is carried out in the proper way.

Make sure not to touch the tip of the bottle because of the high risk of contamination.

Do not wear contact lenses while applying this medication. Wait for approximately 15 minutes before you can put the contact lenses back again.

Do not apply Lumigan with other ophthalmic medications. The interval should be not less 15 before and after application of any other eye medication.

 

How does Lumigan work?

Lumigan eye drops contain bimatoprost 300mcg/ml, a synthetic analogue (mimic) of the naturally occurring prostamide, which is a prostaglandin-like chemical that has distinct and specific actions in various tissues of the body, including potent ocular hypotensive (pressure reducing) activity. The build up of pressure in the eye that is seen in glaucoma is caused by a blockage in the draining system for the eye fluid called aqueous humour, which is produced continually to maintain normal eye pressure. Bimatoprost in Lumigan eye drops binds to the same receptors in the eye as prostamide and increases the flow of aqueous humour out of the eye through the spongy tissue called the trabecular network, which is the conventional drainage route for the aqueous, by reducing the tonographic (pressure-sensitive) resistance to outflow of aqueous humour. As the flow of fluid into and out of the eye becomes balanced again, the pressure in the eye is lowered and this reduces the risk of damage to the optic nerve and loss of sight that can happen if glaucoma is left untreated.

 

Lumigan bottle Side Effects

As with any medication, side effects that are associated on the normal use of the medication at recommended amount of dosage are expected to occur. Any of the following side effects are considered common side effects of Lumigan:

  • Increased thickness and length of eyelashes
  • Change in the color of your iris usually detectable after at least 8 months of continuous use
  • Burning sensation or irritation in the eye
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Eye discomfort
  • Darkening of eyelids and eyelashes

Stop using the medication and inform your health care provider right away if you experienced any of the following symptoms :

Signs of allergic reactions such as hives; breathing difficulty; swelling of face, lips, mouth, tongue and throat.

  • Eye pain or swelling
  • Inflammation or redness of the eyelids
  • Changes of vision
  • It is important to inform your Doctor if you experienced unusual changes of your vision or health. Regular appointment with your health care provider for an eye examination is essential to avoid the risk of serious side effects.
